Security officers in Garissa County have apprehended 14 fraud suspects, accused of duping gullible locals into buying contraband phones and electronics.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) carried a crackdown in the area, after receiving a series of complaints from the swindled local residents. According to the DCI, the spammers hail from the neighbouring Meru and Kitui Counties, and have been conning unsuspecting buyers in Garissa.
Garissa Regional Police Commander David Bunei, urged residents who have fallen victim to the con artists, to report the cases to the authorities for action. Mr Bunei was speaking during the launch of an ECDE classroom in Garissa Police camp.
The Regional Police Commander further said, the DCI detectives are examining the exhibits and interrogating the accused persons, for more leads.
The authorities impounded several units of the fake gadgets, which will be analysed by the Kenya Bureau of Standards to ascertain their quality.
Mr Bunei also urged local parents and guardians to be extra vigilant with their children, to protect the young ones from abductions and disappearances that have become rampart in the recent past.
