Various stakeholders in Isiolo have announced aims to revive Garbatulla Ranet FM, that collapsed due to cash constraints in 2019.
The community radio station was established 5 years ago by UKAid and other organizations such as National Drought Management Authority. The sole aim of the radio station was to wh provide news on weather and climate forecasts and coverage of topical issues affecting the local community such as agriculture and health. However, its operations were short-lived, as the station shut down when donor funding ended.
It’s reported that the community radio station employed unskilled workers since its inception in 2016, something that is attributed to its downfall. The absence of professionally trained journalists, coupled with lack of clear working guidelines led to the station’s demise.
However, new management led majorly by the local organisation Merti Integrated Development Programme (MID-P) has unveiled plans to give Garbatulla Ranet FM a new lease on life.
Through MID-P’s Executive Director Molu Tepo, the radio station is expected to be brought back to life, in order to continue serving the community. He revealed that the German government had offered Sh2 million for the revival of the station.
Mr. Tepo also added that plans are underway to revamp the station through the hiring of qualified staff and expansion of its reach to 100km from the current 30km.
