Uganda’s opposition politicians Bobi Wine and Kizza Besigye will have to wait on the sidelines of the country’s political power as incumbent President Yoweri Museveni takes oath of office for another five-year term.

Museveni was sworn in by Chief Justice, Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo on Wednesday at Kololo Independence Grounds in the capital Kampala.

“I Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni swear in the name of the Almighty God that I shall faithfully exercise the functions of the president of Uganda,” said Museveni amid ululations from hundreds of his ruling National Resistance Movement party supporters who graced the function.

“I shall uphold, preserve, protect and defend the constitution and observe the laws of Uganda and that I shall promote the welfare of the people of Uganda,” he said.

Museveni got 5.85 million votes (58.64 per cent) of the total votes cast in the January 14, 2021 presidential election, a result that was challenged by Bobi Wine before withdrawing the case, alleging “bias” by Supreme Court justices hearing the case.

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, rejected the results saying he believed victory was stolen from him.

The pop star and lawmaker then asked the court to overturn the results on several grounds, including the widespread use of violence but withdrew the petition because he did not believe he would get a fair hearing before a court appointed by President Museveni. He said based on the conduct of the early stages of the case, it was his opinion that the court was “not interested in giving Ugandans justice”.

The withdrawal of the case meant that Museveni, a former guerrilla leader who has led the East African country since 1986, would be sworn in to lead for another five years.

More than 10 African heads of state, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Felix Tshisekedi who is the current chairperson of the African Union, several government representatives, diplomats from various countries and other dignitaries attended the inauguration ceremony yesterday.Museveni
