Members of Wajir County Assembly (MCAs) have impeached Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud despite a High Court order barring them from the same.
The MCAs said the court had no authority over the business of the Assembly and voted to extend sitting to midnight as they debated the motion to impeach Governor Abdi.
Thirty seven MCAs voted in favour of the impeachment, 10 voted against while two were reportedly absent.
However, the governor’s lawyers led by Mr Ndegwa Njiru and Ndegwa Mwangi warned that any MCA who participated in a motion to impeach the governor would be held personally responsible.
“Any officer or MCA who purports to execute the motion will personally be cited for contempt,” the lawyers warned.
The Assembly through its clerk, had last week notified Governor Mohamud to appear before MCAs to defend himself over claims of corruption, gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The ward representatives have cited various reasons on why they wanted the governor out office, including gross violation of the law; committing a crime under the national laws and lacking the capability to run the county.
Besides, runaway corruption and abuse of office, the ward representatives accuse the governor of lacking the mental capability to run the county government.
